Senator Warner Receives Widespread Coverage of Fair Shot For All Virginians Tour

Senator Warner continued his Fair Shot For All Virginians tour, traveling to Hampton Roads, Richmond and Northern Virginia to hear from veterans, business and community leaders about issues most affecting their communities. At the stops, Senator Warner discussed his bipartisan work to reform the Department of Veteran Affairs, as well as his efforts to boost the economy, ensure college affordability and provide all Virginians with a fair shot at success.

Vets vent to Warner at campaign stop [The Washington Post, 8/20/14]
“Sen. Mark Warner (D-Va.) had just finished greeting the members of the Disabled American Veterans Chapter #58 and removed his suit jacket when the emotional stories about misplaced paperwork, frustrating interactions and endless bureaucracy at the Department of Veteran’s Affairs began…. “I’m going to be on this, as much as I can be on this,” Warner said to one individual, noting that his proposal to reform the VA’s ailing IT systems was part of the VA reform bill signed into law by President Obama this month….Warner was among the first Democratic senators to call for the resignation of then-VA Secretary Eric Shinseki after the news of a widespread coverup of long wait times and corruption inside VA surfaced last spring.”

“U.S. Sen. Mark Warner, on the campaign trail Monday, stopped by the Disabled American Veterans office in Gloucester to find out what local veterans think of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs. He got an earful. Veterans told Warner stories of appointment delays and cancellations, inability to get through on telephone calls, inadequate coverage, lost records, and rude treatment at VA hospitals. As each person talked, Warner approached him or her and listened quietly, occasionally patting this or that one on the back for comfort.”

He said if people do not perform they will get fired.”

Marco Rubio, R-Fla., will give young professionals a shortcut to paying off student loan debt.“Over the last 20 years, federal and state aid to higher education in terms of direct aid is a straight line down,” Warner said in a Richmond appearance.“We’re just making it easier for you to borrow money, and suddenly that has come to a breaking point,” Warner told entrepreneurs at a Q&A session hosted by CO+LAB.”

“Warner had just come from touring the Rappahannock Oyster Company in Topping and observed that there was a lot of pride in relation to the restoration of area oyster populations that is in turn creating new jobs and business for the region. Warner spoke with veterans in Gloucester, visited the Hampton VA on Friday and noted frustrations with the reported inefficiencies of the Department of Veterans Affairs.”
