Virginia's Senator

“I am proud to pledge my support for Senator Warner’s re-election”

I am excited that Senator Warner has chosen Wise County as the first stop on his ‘Working Together’ tour and honored to be a part of this event. Sen. Warner has shown a deep commitment to us here in Southwest Virginia during his time in the Senate and as Governor.

As Chair of the Wise County Democratic Committee I believe part of my responsibility is to help make sure that we have a representative in the U.S. Senate who properly advocates for and supports the advancement of Wise County and all of Southwest Virginia.

Mark Warner continually fights for measures in the Senate to improve the quality of life in Wise County. When we face real problems, Senator Warner acts to find solutions. Southwest Virginia faces a nursing shortage. Senator Warner worked to secure grants for a nurse-training program at our local community college — Mountain Empire Community College (MECC). In 2010, Senator Warner helped bring a $1.2 million grant that would do just that. Real results, for real problems.

Senator Warner’s commitment to working together is especially clear as he crosses party lines in order to benefit the coal industry. He was one of only five Democratic senators to vote against strict EPA regulations that limit coal productivity and jobs. His work to advocate for greater investment in American coal, as well as increased reliance on American energy in his “all the above energy plan” means investing in the future of coal sector jobs right here in our community. I know that Senator Warner will continue to keep us as a priority.

Tonight was a great event. I have always appreciated Senator Warner’s willingness to talk about issues facing my community and our country. I appreciate his candor and his work for the Commonwealth.

I am proud to pledge my support for Senator Warner’s re-election and I look forward to do everything I can to help him in that effort.

Melanie B. Salyer
Chair, Wise County Democratic Committee
